Biography and CV

Justin was born in and lives in Bristol in the UK. has a PGCE as well as a Ba(hons) degree in fine art photography from Derby Lonsdale College.  
He is considered to be one of the world experts in pinhole photography, camera obscuras and experimental photography which he has been teaching for over 30 years at all levels from primary to university level in the UK and worldwide.

Other establishments include: The Photographers Gallery, The Martin Parr Foundation, the Science Museum, The British Library, Lacock Abbey, Lomo New York and the Corcoran in Washington DC and lecture tours of the US, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. He was pinhole photography consultant for the Rachel Weisz – Mark Ruffalo movie ‘The Brothers Bloom’.
He has an extensive portfolio of work but is known worldwide for ‘Mouthpiece’ where he used a small pinhole camera to take images from inside his mouth. He is also known for innovative camera obscura designs.

 For 20 years he has been an associate lecturer in photography at Falmouth University and has been an organizer of the annual Experimental Photography Festival in Barcelona (EXP) since its inception.

For the past seven years he has been a director of the Bristol community darkrooms in St Pauls in Bristol.


Statement.

Not sure why I haven’t bothered adding to my CV since lockdown., maybe I just felt it didn’t matter but if only to keep memories alive here is a brief resume of some of the fun and games that have occurred.

More importantly I have been far too slowly evolving an idea as to why I keep doing this kind of thing. This has helped give me an idea on what I enjoy and what I hope to do moving on much of which goes in two directions: 1 Experimentation in my photography and 2 Experimental photography in education.

Both involve the essential life chemistry of social interaction.

Associate Lecturer Falmouth University – 2000 till present.

Director of the Real Photography Company at the St Pauls Community Darkrooms.  
7 years of getting funding for workshops around ‘Photography for Wellbeing’ at the community darkrooms in St Pauls. This has included working with members of the community including people recovering from addiction as well as having taught over 1000 local primary school children ‘The Chemistry of Light’ introducing them to the wonder of the darkroom whilst getting funding from science and chemistry funders.

 

Experimental Photography Festival – Barcelona

I somehow found myself here at its inception having wrote several sections of its initial manifesto in 2020. Since then I have been to every festival doing seminars and workshops on many subjects.
